Sandwich Box
67 Richmond W. 416-913-4444.
238 Queen W. 416-204-9411.

I sometimes wonder why the ghost of the fourth Earl of Sandwich doesn’t go around messing, A Christmas Carol–style, with whomever is responsible for the concoctions sold at Wendy’s, McDonald’s and Burger King. Maybe, after a visit to Sandwich Box, his soul finally rests peacefully. Following the lead of their original shop at 238 Queen W., the year-old, off-Bay location on Richmond offers almost unlimited permutations of wholesome meals encased in bread. For $7.35, you get to choose which out of a dozen breads you would like, which dressing to put on your bread and then three toppings of your choice. You can have your sandwich panini grilled or just take it room temperature, and all sandwiches are lovingly packaged in individual boxes with a generous portion of salad.

The emphasis put on freshness is, well, refreshing and on the night of my visit they had seven fresh cheeses, eight types of meat and assorted veggies ranging from plain lettuce and tomato to caramelized onions and portobello mushrooms. Fresh soups and desserts are also offered, and during the lunch-hour rush, there’s an express menu offered as well.

Next time somebody tells you sandwiches are boring or that the only options are super-sized fries and burger combos, give them a virtual slap or two by taking them to the Sandwich Box.
