The Chameleon Project simply can’t shake their unfortunate choice of name. It’s as though their moniker gives them license to try on one genre after another, whether it’s half-baked drum ’n’ bass, fusion-lite or ersatz reggae. Nor do they measure up in instrumental proficiency. When the tempo doubles, drummer Tyrone Caissie can’t keep on top of the groove; the tempo starts to wobble and the whole band strains to catch up. Conversely, when they try some dub on for size, the pace seems rushed. Unlike many jazz/groove trios (The Bad Plus, for instance) who have completely scrambled the melodic and rhythmic roles of each member, these Chameleons break no new ground while keeping their tepid funk in a too-shallow pocket.
