Editorial Rating:

Skulls do get bashed from time to time in this visionary Viking epic by the Dane behind The Pusher Trilogy, but viewers who come expecting lusty scenes of Norsemen in battle may be thrown by Valhalla Rising’s more mystic nature and thin narrative about a one-eyed warrior who joins a doomed expedition to the Holy Land by would-be Christian crusaders from the Scottish Highlands. Werner Herzog’s Aguirre: the Wrath of God is an obvious touchstone for this story of violent men going mad in the New World and the best scenes of Valhalla Rising have a similarly powerful impact thanks to the stark cinematography, noise-laden score and the sheer manliness of Mads Mikkelsen.
