SHIT LA MERDE
WITH DVAS (LIVE), BISHOP MOROCCO (LIVE), DJS DAVE LA MERDE, DOUGIE BOOM, MATT CULLY, PAMMM, UNLOVABLE DJS. THE GARRISON, 1197 DUNDAS W. $15 ADVANCE TICKETS AT ROTATE THIS, SOUNDSCAPES, TICKETWEB.CA. $20 AT DOOR.

Expect indie rockers shaking it alongside clubbers at this special edition of Shit La Merde. Rising local (by-way-of-Edmonton) electronic duo DVAS showcase the funky, pop-filtered electro-house that got them signed to Upper Class Recordings for an album due next summer. Bishop Morocco, a.k.a. Toronto natives Jake Fairley and James Sayce, come a little darker, performing an amalgam of rock, new wave and Madchester influences. DJs Dave La Merde and Dougie Boom join them while Pammm, Goin’ Steady’s Matt Cully, and the Unlovable DJs spin rock, blues, Motown, girl groups and more in a second room.

RON TRENT @ SOLID GARAGE MEETS FOOTPRINTS
WITH SAMBA ELEGUA (LIVE), GROOVE INSTITUTE, JASON PALMA, DJ STUART, GENERAL ECLECTIC, HOST LYBIDO. REVIVAL, 783 COLLEGE. $30 ADVANCE TICKETS AT PLAY DE RECORD, ROTATE THIS, SOUNDSCAPES, COSMOS RECORDS.

In a two-floor pairing that makes soulful good sense, the crews behind house event Solid Garage and jazz, soul and Afro Latin monthly Footprints present diverse DJ/producer Ron Trent. While Trent was initially known for super-deep-house releases, including his epic and still revered Altered States EP of 1990, he’s also played and made dancefloor funk, jazz and soul and worked with the likes of Amp Fiddler, Tony Allen and 4hero. This is an ideal party for Trent to flex his range. Afro-Brazilian inspired percussion ensemble Samba Elégua performs at midnight.

NEW YEARS THROWDOWN 2010
WITH DJS DOPEY, GROUCH, SERIOUS, DALIA, NUMERIC, TED DANCIN’, CIRCLE RESEARCH, JOHN KONG, HOST MYMANHENRI. EL MOCAMBO, 1ST FL, 464 SPADINA AV. $20 ADVANCE TICKETS AT PLAY DE RECORD, SOUNDSCAPES, COSMOS, SLINKY MUSIC.

Continuing the theme of promoter collaboration, here we have funky soul/jazz brothers John Kong and Circle Research representing as the Do Right! Soundsystem while partnering with the crew of hip-hop monthly Never Forgive Action. They’ve extra-stacked the decks in inviting three of this city’s finest turntablist/producers — DJs Dopey, Grouch and Serious — to join them in bringing the classic hip-hop, R&B, funk and disco. It’s guaranteed to be an eve filled with secret weapon tunes.

2010: COME TOGETHER
WITH MARCUS VISIONARY, DJ TASC, FREEZA CHIN WITH MC PLAIN ENGLISH, SPYNE, CARNAGE, DJ SPINZ, MR. BROWN, SCOTT FREE, HOST LUCKY GENERAL. EL MOCAMBO, 2ND FL, 464 SPADINA AV. $16 ADVANCE TICKETS AT PLAY DE RECORD, GLOSSY COLLECTIVE, SHANTI BABA, UNICUS. $20 AT DOOR.

Promo team Soul In Motion is known as one of T.O.’s strongest advocates of innovative drum & bass. Here, they gather top players in various bass music camps to represent for D&B, dubstep, UK funky and more. DJ/producer phenom Marcus Visionary is a poster boy for this approach as he constantly pushes new ideas in sound. Also expect big things from Freeza Chin and MC Plain English; their deft, energetic take on bass music’s four-four fusions is currently killing dancefloors.

BANG THE PARTY
WITH DJS DIRTY DALE, ANDYCAPP, ROD SKIMMINS, POOYAN. THE BOAT, 158 AUGUSTA. $15 AT DOOR.

Those searching for house-party vibes in a party helmed by true school music geeks need look no further. Gang of Two DJs Andycapp and Rod Skimmins launched their mad eclectic monthly Bang the Party — personified in the figure of Ms. Grace Jones — three years back and have brought heavy doses of disco, boogie and house to capacity crowds ever since. Fellow collector and selector Pooyan has since joined the crew while creative, house-centric DJ Dirty Dale is a kindred spirit, making this a family affair.
