Whether you’re looking for a brainy way to commemorate Pride or just an air-conditioned break from partying, it’s worth checking out the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Pride programming.
Pride tours run all weekend long (June 27-28, 11:30am and 2:30pm) highlighting gay, lesbian and bisexual artists throughout the ages, from Georgia O’Keeffe to Kent Monkman (work pictured at right). Meanwhile, the Artwherk! Collective has taken over Walker Court with its roundup of work from young and emerging queer artists, which runs until June 28.
To get the most bang for your buck, grab a two-for-one coupon from Pride Toronto’s official Pride Guide and visit on June 27, when there’s a musical performance by Faith Nolan (noon) and a juicy talk by the AGO’s chief curator, Dennis Reid (2pm), titled “The Outing of a Canadian Icon.” Which popular 19th-century Canadian painter was actually gay? You’ll have to attend to find out.
And to keep your Pride buzz going, hit the gallery’s FRANK restaurant, where they’re serving special cocktails (the Oscar Wilde and the Alice B. Toklas) as well as an Ontario wine dubbed Chardonngay. Bottoms up!
Entry to pride events is included in admission to AGO (317 Dundas W). $18/$15 Seniors/$10 students/$10 youth (6-12). www.ago.net.
