Off the International Radar
NOV 7, THE GARRISON, 1197 DUNDAS W
Ignore the name, Off the International Radar is definitely on the must-hear map. And this is music you can also see: OTIR’s audiovisual live shows loop projected imagery over their Krautrock/punk/psychedelic cocktail. This week the former house-party heroes launch their Hot Lips EP, which includes an “epic collaboration” with Holy Fuck. 9pm. $7.
The Fiery FurnacesNOV 7, EL MOCAMBO, 464 SPADINA AV
Brooklyn’s sibling duo Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger return with their latest album, I’m Going Away, featuring song-stories inspired by the ’70s sitcom Taxi mixed with jazz piano and ever-changing tempos. Keep an eye out for their upcoming album, which will come in book form: Silent Record is their response to the file-sharing craze. $20. 8pm.
Dan AuerbachNOV 7, PHOENIX, 410 SHERBOURNE
Dan Auerbach’s Keep It Hid might be his solo album debut, but he’s far from alone. Expanding his duo The Black Keys’ swampy blues-rock into a full-band sound (including opening act Jessica Lea Mayfield) means fans will want to brace themselves for an overdose of soul. $20.50. 5:30pm.
IslandsNOV 7, MOD CLUB, 722 COLLEGE
Following their acclaimed second disc, Arm’s Way, former The Unicorns majordomo Nick Thorburn made Islands’ lineup disappear in a puff of smoke. The ethereal sounds captured on their aptly named concept album, Vapours, offer the perfect buzz — all natural, of course. $15. 6pm.
White DenimNOV 9, HORSESHOE TAVERN, 370 QUEEN W
White Denim don’t just kick out the jams, they have Fits. The title of the Austin, Texas trio’s second album is a good, uh, fit for their much-blogged-about herky-jerky psych-garage sound, as well as how your body will react. Involuntary convulsions have never been so much fun. With Brazos. $12. 8pm.
Cursed ArrowsNOV 5, THE GARRISON, 1197 DUNDAS W
Now armed with an album recorded under their proper name, nothing can stop Waterloo husband-and-wife duo Cursed Arrows (formerly just Arrows). The unhinged art-rock of their new disc, Telepathic High Five, will bulldoze its way into your brain, and bro down with it. With Railcars, We’re For Barton. $TBD. 8pm.
