Isn’t buying cleaning products the biggest drag? Shouldn’t you be getting paid to do chores? Never mind the price of having an eco conscience — most planet-happy products come at a premium. Forget it. Here’s my kind of green washing: self-making a few frugal, super-easy cleaners (and then being all like, “Here you go, honey”).

For a super-cheap scrub, mix two parts baking soda with one part lemon juice (fresh-squeezed, if you please) and one part white vinegar. The fizzy mix will have the consistency of toothpaste, and whiten just as nicely.

Spray down the shower with a large spritz bottle filled with two parts water, one part rubbing alcohol (the kind you buy at any drugstore), one part white vinegar and 15-20 drops of tea tree oil, a natural and not-bad-smelling disinfectant.

To polish floors, use two parts lemon juice, one part olive oil and a rag. And for windows, use vinegar and water, then shine-dry with crumpled newspaper.

So simple, so thrifty, even your Dutch immigrant momma would be proud — not to mention Ma Earth.
