Out with the incumbents!

With Toronto’s democratic system being what it is, going up against an incumbent councillor is a battle best described as all uphill all the time — especially for someone who hasn’t previously done time in the clamshell. Beating an incumbent is not impossible, however. Here are a few suggestions on how to do so, inspired by current councillors who made it happen.
Karen Stintz: Sometimes “City Councillor Wanted” ads posted by disgruntled residents’ groups aren’t too good to be true.
Rob Ford: When the current councillor seems to be MIA in a violence-prone ward, anything is possible.
Suzan Hall: Don’t underestimate the power of community activism and a prominent TDSB position.
Anthony Perruzza: Having been a councillor and provincial member of parliament helps. So do police officers at the polling stations.
