Toronto Notes

Homicide: web division

If you’re like us, a trio of CSI and Law & Order spin-offs and a slew of other cop shows just don’t fill the police-procedural quota. Luckily, the Toronto Police force has the answer to our woes. The department’s homicide unit recently launched an interactive website that will profile over 400 active and cold murder cases. And though the site is intended as a public engagement tool to help police solve these horrific crimes, it also serves as fodder for cop-drama junkies, strung out on Spike TV’s latest CSI: New York marathon. We're calling upon our favourite fictional detectives, who would be best qualified to help solve these real Toronto murders.

Lt. Horatio Caine of CSI: Miami: In August of 1983 the body of a Toronto woman was found in her bedroom. She had been stabbed multiple times. Six months later another Toronto woman’s body was found in her own bedroom. Police later linked these two crimes using DNA evidence.

Dets. Frank Pembleton and Tim Bayliss of Homicide: Life on the Streets
: Earlier this year two young men were sitting in an SUV outside a friend’s home when someone opened fire into the car killing the two men. The killer and his motivations are unknown.

Det. Lilly Rush of Cold Case: In 1978 the body of a well-known downtown-club manager was found in his apartment, having died from numerous stab wounds. The murder remains unsolved and is considered a cold case.

Sr. Det. Lennie Briscoe of Law & Order: In 2002 a man’s body was found in the back of a taxi. His murder, a shooting, was captured on the cab’s on-board camera. Despite the video evidence, neither the shooter, nor the cab’s driver has been identified.
