Hunter and Cook out

It's both Babe City and Baby City at the
Hunter and Cook
magazine party on Friday night, at 15 Ossington, the magazine's just-opened boutique/studio/gallery headquarters. Former Deadly Snakes frontman-turned-painter
Andre Ethier
, whose work lines the gallery walls, tells me he's bailing early because his kid is hungry. Local singer/songwriter
Jennifer Castle
has come strapped to her infant. As I leave, a gang of friends enters, including a baby in sling. The party, brightly lit and muffled with the puffy parkas of attractive people, is a great testament to the possibilities of real adulthood.
Jay Isaac
, the artist who runs Hunter and Cook with
Tony Romano
, was looking to open a space with his girlfriend,
Lindsay Fernlund
, and they happened on a vacancy at 15 Ossington. The location, beside Sweaty Betty's on all-is-everything Ossington at Queen, was curiously vacant, and they grabbed it for Fernlund's clothes shop (named Silver Falls), the gallery and the back-room studio.
A future exhibition space for the artists featured in
Hunter and Cook
, tonight it's just Ethier's “No New Jokes” exhibit, of textured paintings and sculpture. The magazine got started last August, when Isaac returned to Toronto from New Brunswick, and is now two issues in.
Isaac relates the abundance of
new, well-crafted, locally-based art mags
to vinyl — that other return-to-the-tangible is appealing in the same way as this and other “old-school artist magazines." The first issue was released in October, and features a nice interview by
Amy Bowles
(of Pony Da Look/Permafrown) on
Corpusse
. Isaac calls the mag “very subjective”, and says that it's intended to cover artists they like. The second issue has Ethier;
Brad Phillip
s on
Melanie Schiff
;
Seth Scriver
, and many others in an oversized, great-looking collection of interviews, drawings, photography, and other ephemera that's nice to hold up in front of you.
Available at most of the usual spots (Book City; Pages), new issues go for 10 bucks, and back issues sell for five.
