It’s not too early to start your weekend drinking, and it’s also not too late to declare an official drink of the recession, is it? If your answers are no and no, imbibe a Calimocho immediately.

It’s a little something I learned about in Barcelona, where partiers are broke and creative, although it’s also drunk in Croatia, Mozambique, and the former Yugoslavia. (Thank you, Wikipedia.) Here’s the deal: you mix equal parts cola and red wine, pour over rocks in a tumbler and add a twist of citrus. I recommend diet cola — not just because it’s swimsuit season, but also ’cause all the sugar in the “real stuff,” combined with the eight-buck chuck you’ll use, would make for a relentless hangover. The most authentically cheap and Spanish red is Candidato Oro, widely available at LCBOs for just $7.95 a bottle; its dark fruitiness makes the drink go down like Cherry Coke. For a white party, do it with sauvignon blanc and Fresca.
