The T.O. Do List: June 26 2009

1. Outside Music have just released a compilation of now-defunct alt-folk quartet Royal City’s b-sides and rarities. To celebrate, former members of the band (Evan Gordon and Nathan Lawr) plus friends Gentleman Reg, Jenny Omnichord, Woolly Leaves and many others take to the Tranzac stage tonight to perform their favourite RC songs. 292 Brunswick Ave. $10. 8pm.

2. Sunparlour Players are comprised of a former Mennonite choir boy, a classically trained clarinetist and a punk-rock drummer. And that’s not all — at tonight's release party for the local roots-rock trio’s second album, Wave North, expect to hear them tackle banjo, bass, glockenspiel, bells, whistles and “other stuff too.” Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen W.). $10. 10pm.

3. Like many practitioners of true-school soul music, last week's EYE WEEKLY covergirl Sharon Jones cut her teeth in church, singing joyful noise unto the lord — and you can tell. But beyond her commanding vocal delivery, Jones has the passion and presence of a fire-and-brimstone preacher. She’s a missionary, looking to spread the good word about something she believes in with evangelical faith. Jones and her trusty Dap-Kings bandmates make their much anticipated appearance at the Toronto Jazz Festival tonight. Mainstage Concert Theatre, Nathan Phillips Square, 100 Queen W. $35 from Ticketmaster.

4. Imagine Danger Mouse going back in time to produce Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly smoothie-funk soundtrack and you’ll have an idea what you’re in for with England’s The Heavy. The band hits Supermarket (268 Augusta) tonight. $17.50 from Ticketmaster.

5. Don’t go see Sonny Rollins because he’s a legend, or because he’s pretty good for a 78-year-old. Go see him because, to this very day, he can produce a fleet-footed run of melodic bebop wizardry that none of his acolytes have yet been able to match.
