The T.O. Do List: July 1 2009

1. We can’t decide whether Calgarian Chad VanGaalen’s soft vocals and pretty plucking or Toronto/Montreal (via Guelph) rockers Constantines’ rough and raucous sound are better suited to a rendition of our national anthem. One thing’s for sure: the combined awesomeness of both acts tonight at Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay W.) will help you drown out those traumatic memories of Celine Dion’s wailing version of “O Canada.” Free. 8pm.

2. Bassist Brandi Disterheft’s Juno-winning album Debut came as a pleasant surprise to followers of the local scene. Blending hard bop–inspired compositions with the occasional pop-inflected vocal, Debut is equal parts classic and progressive, and Disterheft displays formidable talents as a writer, bassist and bandleader. Seen here opening for Dave Brubeck, Disterheft’s follow-up album and a recent collaboration with Hank and Oliver Jones are two of this year’s most anticipated releases. Get a preview tonight when Disterheft plays Nathan Phillips Square (100 Queen W.). $55 from Ticketmaster. 8pm.

3. And, if this week's EYE WEEKLY cover isn't enough of a hint — it's Fringe Festival time! Check out this week's Arts section for our festival preview and critics' best bets, and then be sure to bookmark our Fringe Festival review site, where we'll be reviewing every single Fringe production throughout the festival (July 1-12) and give you the opportunity to respond with your own critiques.
