The T.O. Do List: July 2 2009

1. How does a literary festival with the theme “the book is dead” kick off? If you’re Scream in High Park, you draft Derek McCormack, author of the gayadelic vampire novel The Show That Smells, and Tony Burgess, author of the wordy plague-novel Pontypool Changes Everything, to host your opening night and put on a cheesy variety show with singing and dancing writers and — rumour has it — a glow-in-the-dark castle set. The Gladstone Hotel Ballroom, 1214 Queen W. 7pm. PWYC ($7 sugg.). 416-531-4635. www.thescream.ca.

2. Techno/house DJ Heidi moved from her native Windsor to London, England in 2000 where she worked in record stores and was part of the team that opened the famed Phonica Records shop. She made lots of connections, but it wasn’t until she became close with the Get Physical label’s Patrick Bodmer and Philip Jung (a.k.a. M.A.N.D.Y.) in 2004 that Heidi began to DJ. By 2005, Heidi was gigging across Europe and increased her profile the next year by releasing “Vejer,” a collaborative single with Riton that was also featured on her excellent Monza Club Ibiza mix-CD. She checks into The Social (1100 Queen W.) tonight with Nitin, Johnny White and Brandon Sek. $10 from Soundscapes, Rotate This, Slinky Music, Ticketweb.com.

3. Fringe pick of the day: Aurora Stewart De Peña’s 36 Little Plays About Hopeless Girls — receiving its second run at this year’s Fringe festival after a successful stint at the Tranzac Club in 2007 — honours those paralyzed, confused women in the midst of something far more gripping than a quarter-life crisis. A young playwright and director with a production company, Birdtown And Swanville, she co-founded with Nika Mistruzzi, De Peña hits upon the saddest sect of despondent women: losers who don’t know they’re losers. Featuring Donna Maloney, Cara Gee, Liz Peterson, Monique Moses, Aurora Stewart De Peña, Nika Mistruzzi, Sochi Fried, Jolene Devoe, Julia Lederer, Laura McCoy, Lauren Bride, Rebecca Applebaum and Nicole Stamp. Schedule: July 2 10pm; July 3-4 4:15pm; July 5 8:15pm; July 6 10pm; July 8 6:15pm; July 9-10 10pm; July 11-12 8:15pm. $10. Bread and Circus, 299 Augusta. 416-966-1062. www.fringetoronto.com.
