The T.O. Do List: July 31, 2009

1. It looked like gritty NYC rapper Jadakiss’ legendary rasp might not be coming out of radios any time soon when his album was being endlessly pushed back, but on the strength of “Letter to B.I.G.,” The Last Kiss bowed at #3 on Billboard and finally got him some money to go with the power and respect. He hits the Guvernment (1 Jarvis) tonight for Caribana with DJ Clymaxxx, more. $22 from Play De Record, www.clubzone.com.

2. The unmistakable sound of the Caribbean emanates from the steel pan, Trinidad’s national instrument. Originally made out of steel oil drums, cut and hammered to deliver a range of notes, the music of the steel pan is synonymous with Island culture. Pan Alive promises to showcase the musical and tonal qualities of the instrument as members of the Ontario Steelband Association compete before a panel of judges. Lamport Stadium, 1151 King W. $15-25. www.caribanafestival.com.

3. Local sludge-metal trio Orn’s limited-edition release Teeth/Knowing (on Elevation, a label co-owned by Toronto Maple Leaf Boyd Devereaux) is heavy as watching grainy CCTV footage of a collapsing building, frame by frame. It's a bit quicker — but only just. They play the Silver Dollar (486 Spadina Av.) tonight with Blood Ceremony, Reverse Mount Rushmore, Orca. $6. 9pm.

4. The June release of Let the Dominoes Fall, Rancid's seventh studio album, provides the occasion for tonight's Molson Amphitheatre gig, but the punk-rock foursome’s legendary cult following will undoubtedly demand “Ruby Soho.” Everyone wins! With Rise Against, Saint Alvia. 909 Lakeshore W. $46-$49.50 from Live Nation. 7:30pm.

5. Even house die-hards’ commitment wavers from time to time, but Joaquin “Joe” Claussell is making sure that house keeps the faith. His Sacred Rhythm label continues to go strong, the 13-year-old Body & Soul series in NYC that he co-runs with Danny Krivit and François K. is still vital and Claussell remains an animated presence behind the decks — his YouTube clips show him dancing along as hard as anyone in the crowd. So long as he keeps making connections between African, latin and jazz music and house culture, house’s soul is safe from harm. He appears at Cobra (510 King W.) tonight with Felix + Gani. $20 from milkaudio.com.
