Stoned immaculate

A word of advice: you should probably smoke pot while listening to this. Or stare at a black velvet painting of a crying Jesus, or Jimi Hendrix. Or wonder why your baby toes look so cute. Regardless, the ultimate soundtrack to your (very stoned) life has come by way of a collaboration between Texan psych-metal crew Pyramids and Toronto duo Nadja (pictured), named, funnily enough, Pyramids with Nadja.

The supergroup's 15-minute self-titled Hydrahead EP — available for streaming at Stereogum — gives new meaning to the term “ambient dirge guitar," thanks to an airy, almost transcendental treatment. With cameos from Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coil bass-man Simon Raymonde, Mineral/Gloria Record frontman Chris Simpson and Austrian artist Albin Julius (of Der Blutharsch), shit gets heavy.

I particularly like how Simpson's earnest, crystal clear vocals mix with the scratching, pristine waves of electronic fuzz (very Kid A). “Doom metal” is the operative genre, I guess — but within these songs there’s more than enough My Blood Valentine melancholy, Nine Inch Nails industrialism, and even Boris-style pot-psych freakouts to wreak havoc on your very confused mind. Word to the wise: try eating some brown-rice sushi. Dude…
