1. Jazz innovator and alto sax icon Ornette Coleman’s mind has always been ahead of the rest of us, but even he couldn’t have predicted that his once-controversial music would end up as much a part of the jazz canon as Louis Armstrong's. He makes a rare local appearance tonight at Massey Hall (178 Victoria). $69.50-$89.50. 8pm.2. AFE Society duo Nitin and Terence Kissner may be rooted in techno, but they’ve bumped up the mutant house factor in their bookings, making British DJ/producer Matt Tolfrey an ideal guest. Releasing new material steadily over the past four years on labels including Crosstown Rebels, Cocoon and his own Leftroom Records, Tolfrey creates melodic, bass-driven funky tech-house. He’s been billed alongside biggies including Richie Hawtin and Ricardo Villalobos and is one of the youngest DJs ever to headline London’s infamous Fabric club, so it’s a treat to have him bringing his slinky house sound to The Social (1100 Queen W.). $10 before midnight.3. With Hospice, the third record from Brooklyn trio The Antlers, chief songwriter Peter Silberman has crafted a set of starkly pretty mopers showcasing a particularly Brooklynesque type of ennui. Silberman’s melodramas echo Cat Power by way of early TV on the Radio, melancholic piano balladry augmented by scuzzy feedback and the occasional grandiose flourish. The band make two appearance in town today: first, a free in-store at Criminal Records (493 Queen W.) at 5pm, and then an 11pm headlining appearance at the Horseshoe (370 Queen W.). $10.50 from Ticketmaster, Rotate This, Horseshoe, Soundscapes.4. Hot Havana nights hit the streets of Toronto with the Havana Cultura Festival, a parade of events that includes free concerts, book readings and drink and food specials. Hosted by the Cuba Tourist Board in conjunction with Havana Club Rum, Havana Cultura, now in its second year, also includes lessons on how to become a torcedore — i.e., a cigar roller. The festival runs from tonight through to Sunday (Sept. 27) at various locations mostly along Queen West. Go to www.havana-cultura.com/canada for the complete schedule of events.5. And if you missed last month's Miracle Fruit tasting at the Drake, you have another chance tonight to transform your tastebuds and freely gorge on various edibles — citrus wedges, balsamic vinegar, pickles, parmesan cheese, dark truffle lollipops — that are usually too strong to consume in mass quantities. 6-8pm. The Drake Hotel (1150 Queen W.). For more information, see www.miraclefruittoronto.com.
