R.I.P.: The Gladstone Cowboy

Before the hipsters starting crowding The Gladstone Hotel's Melody Bar karaoke room every weekend, there was Hank Young, a.k.a. The Gladstone Cowboy, who ruled the room for several decades before serving as keeper of the Queen West hotel's hand-operated elevator. However, the Gladstone — which, in 2004, underwent a radical transformation from run-down residency to boutique arts outpost — has lost this vital link to its storied past; The hotel's website reports that Young passed away this past Saturday (Oct. 24).

Memorial services will be held this Wednesday (Oct. 28), 5-9pm, and Thursday (Oct. 29), 8pm, at the Bates & Dodds Funeral Home (931 Queen W.). Following the Thursday service, The Gladstone will host a celebration of Young's life on the second floor of the hotel, starting at 9pm, to be followed by a tribute night sometime in November. If you can't make it out to any of these events, you can still pay your respects the next time you hit the Melody Bar by belting out a version of "Hey Good Lookin'" in his honour.
