Cheap Thrills: getting the most bang for your budget

Party like it's 1999 (and dress like it, too)

If all you want to do this New Year's Eve night is dress like it's 1999, you're not wrong for thinking it. The past decade saw trend cycles become more like spirals, an ever-more-impatient regurgitation of influences and vintage things, making nostalgia near impossible. There used to be a 20-year rule for recycling influences. Then it was 15 (this past summer was all about 1994, wasn't it?) and soon enough, I'm sure, it'll be 10. Get ahead with the help of this December 1999 article from CNN Arts & Style, which includes seriously good advice from Esprit. (I know, but stay with me here — Esprit was alright once, remember? And they're definitely getting some groove back: the spring campaign stars born-cool girls Daisy Lowe and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.)

Said Esprit.com back then, of a shiny acetate-rayon slip dress: "We like it dressed down with big boots, chunky platforms and fuzzy sweaters." Perfect! right? This New Year's Eve, you want to wear something glitzy and scant, velveteen or lacy, but you need to be a bit comfy — it's a long night. Grab the nine-holes you bought in the great Doc Martens revival of 2008, or try Aldo's Vanleuvan style (pictured), on sale for $80. Alternatively: chunky platforms? Go to Yonge Street, young girl (or boy — they make 'em for you, too). Fuzzy sweaters — loose and cropped a la Clueless — practically have a department of their own at Value Village. Add friendship bracelets, cross necklaces, whatever you can scrounge. Irony is cheap.
