Cheap Thrills: getting the most bang for your budget

Happy brut year

Because you know you'll be stuck when 12 o'clock has struck — in a cab, a bathroom with strangers, or worst, some desperate line outside a club — it's imperative to bring your own bubbly. For those who can't/won't splash out on the real thing, may I recommend a brut cava? It's Spanish for champers, essentially, and is made to sparkle via a second fermentation in the bottle. (As opposed to the more common prosecco, which is re-fermented in a pressurized tank, and thus can taste as cheap as it is.) My favourites are found in LCBO Vintages: try the Codorniu Reserva, on sale for $13.95, or the Castellblanch for $12.95. At those prices, you could bathe in the stuff. But hurry — LCBOs close at 6pm tonight.

This is the final edition of Cheap Thrills. Starting Jan. 4, 2010, Sarah Nicole Prickett will be reporting on Toronto fashion news every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the EYE WEEKLY Style section. See you in the new year!
