Toronto Notes

Required Reading: Jan. 20

1. I've read several really lovely tributes to Kate McGarrigle (who passed away yesterday), like this one by Carl “Zoilus.com” Wilson. But the best comes from her son, Rufus Wainwright. NSFW because of crying. Oh, and speaking of Carl Wilson: his number one fan, James Franco, explains his tenure on General Hospital to New York magazine.

2. Here are “20 great things about dating a writer.” It's cute how they make nice out of “broke,” “unreliable,” “barely employable,” “needy” and “totally exasperating blowhards.”

3. Required Reading is not a democracy. It's a totalitarian regime where my various pet interests and peccadilloes come together every day for a five-point spread of fun and entertainment. So why can't I just include one rad writer instead of a story or book? I own this motherfucker! (Until I send it to my boss for editing, of course.) So you should read the funniest-ever writer Mary HK Choi, who works for TheAwl.com, and formerly at Missbehave. You know how to use the internet, so do that, but maybe start off with her Twitter page just to get a sense of things.

4. I haven't even digested this new Heidi Montag surgery-event. Not only is it too easy to be cruel about the Tragedy Town that is her face (do you think she thinks it's symmetrical?), but I'm not ready to make a call about whether or not she's being sincere. Spencer's overall lack of presence in this whole plastic-surgery showdown is suspicious, too, like he was maybe the first one to drop out of their suicide pact (unexpected!). Here is a short thing about it from the Huffington Post, with video. Key phrase: "'I had too much Demerol like Michael Jackson did,' she told Access Hollywood's Billy Bush. 'My breathing was five breaths per minute, which is like almost dead.'”

5. From the Ladymag Chronicles: I don't believe in calling women "bitches" just because they're women. Unless they're actually bitches. Nina Garcia seems like such a fucking bitch. This is her being interviewed for Mediabistro in their very often very good column “What Do You Do,” about Project Runway and Marie Claire. Garcia both cattily answers real questions in a diva-ed “never mind” way and does that thing of backstabbing while she's saying she'd never backstab. I am happy that Elle got better when she left.
