When self proclaimed “Jewish soccer mom” Lara Lavi took over as the CEO of O.G. hip-hop label Death Row Records at the beginning of this year, she was aiming to excise the memory of the label’s infamous founder Suge Knight. Her goal, as she explained to EYE WEEKLY in late August, was to bring the company “back to being about the artists and the music and the fans. Period.” With recent releases like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic Re-Lit and a Snoop Dogg rarities collection (pictured) it seemed that the label was on track to doing just that.
Well, nobody has hung anybody out of a hotel window by their ankles yet, but things haven’t been going well for Death Row 2.0 lately. First, there was news that New Solutions Capital had fired Lavi from her position as the label’s CEO — New Solutions being the financial backer behind Lavi’s own company WIDEawake Entertainment and the one that facilitated her bid for then-bankrupt Death Row (and yes, I know how confusing that sounds). Then, Lavi fired back with a restraining order against New Solutions, which she followed by seeking a court injunction against the company’s CEO. From the initial Billboard report, it appears as if Lavi was also suing her own former company WIDEawake.
Anyway… this whole mess heads to a New York City court later this week. As of yet, we have been unable to reach Lavi for comment.
