1. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, depressed romantic Stephin Merritt unveils his band The Magnetic Fields’ latest concept album, Realism,
a folk-oriented orchestral collection of songs in the style of Judy
Collins that stands starkly in contrast to 2008’s heavier Distortion. The Magnetic Fields will showcase songs from the new album tonight at The Queen Elizabeth Theatre (190 Princes’ Blvd). $30.50 from Ticketmaster, LiveNation. Doors 7pm. For more, read Chandler Levack's recent interview with the notoriously prickly Merritt.
2. Regent Park, the oldest and largest social-housing unit in Canada, is the setting for Oscar-nominated director Hubert Davis’ latest documentary Invisible City. Tracing three years in the lives of two teenage boys who struggle with a powerful sense of futility, Davis acutely captures the systemic problems of housing projects but also illuminates the possibility for grassroots change. The film continues its week-long run at The Royal (608 College) tonight at 7pm.
