The city is looking for public input on how to best expand its street food options and have devised a very short online survey to gather people’s thoughts. What kind of street food, aside from the regular hot dogs and sausages, do you think Toronto should have; how much are you willing to pay for it, and when are you most likely to buy it? Visit the city’s website to fill out the form.

I was hoping there’d be an open-ended comment section, but there isn’t. If there were, I’d say that they need to add Korean food (specifically Tteokbokki) to the mix and that they should favour food kiosks that produce the least amount of garbage possible (I love convenient food, but I hate takeout containers). I’d also recommend that our micro-management-loving city not get so wrapped up in designing the perfect food-vending cart (see the city’s explanation of the pilot project that will take place this summer for more details). Instead, why not simply put out a request for proposals that simply specifies regulations that must be met? One cart design isn’t going to meet every vendors’ needs. Branding, schmanding. Diverse foods call for diverse carts.

Regardless of what happens, even a measly 15 new non-hotdog street vendors is a welcome change. I’m looking forward to a wider variety of street-eats this summer.
