The Sheraton Centre Hotel across from City Hall is, for many people, everything that is wrong with modernism. The culprit for this civic ire is its unforgivable treatment of Queen Street: solid, impenetrable cliffs of concrete and parking lot entrances make the sidewalk unpleasant and desolate. Yet, from the east and west, the building’s 43 floors are impossibly razor thin and from Nathan Phillips Square it’s a shimmering wall of light at night. The finest details are the interior terraced gardens and waterfalls that run nearly the length of the hotel. If you hate this building, take a peek inside and let it give you something to love.
