In “Harper’s tax on working” (June 12), your editorial on the so-called “revenue-neutral carbon tax” (a tax grab?), you write, “Under Stéphane Dion’s plan, if you carpool, or take transit, or turn your air conditioner down a few degrees, you’ll pay less in taxes....”
So far so good in theory, except that the rich and those who can afford it may not mind paying these taxes and will continue to not carpool, not take transit and not turn down the air conditioners.
If indeed it is a case of “We all save the planet,” then everyone should make an equal sacrifice and the rich should not avoid this sacrifice by what is tantamount to buying an exemption. Many people can pay the extra carbon tax and not feel a pinch. G. LEE
Your defence of Stéphane Dion’s proposed carbon tax did not mention the disasterous effects such a tax has had on the citizenry in Europe. It has resulted in skyrocketing taxes and soaring energy prices. There is rampant rage in the UK over this supposedly revenue-neutral government scheme. Why neglect this relevant information in your editorial? How is Dion’s plan going to be different from the European model? Finally, when has a “plan” of the government ever worked as advertised?

Mistaken identity
I don’t tend to write letters to the editor regarding shows I am a part of but it does frustrate me greatly when simple facts are incorrect. The main character of our production of BLiNK (On Stage, June 12) is actually named Joshua and is played by Mike Ross. Michael Blake plays his friend and fellow photographer, Jay or Jason. Did you not receive a press kit? A program? It is in my opinion very disrespectful to get such simple facts wrong. Please be more diligent in the future so that the artists involved are properly credited. Anything less is just sloppy. KEVIN MACDONALD
Editor’s note: The errors in question are regrettable and we thank Mr. MacDonald for pointing them out. We hate to distract from the substance of a four-star review of a play that, as our critic noted, delivered “invigorating theatre.”
