Re: “And who says Radiohead don’t like to party?”, Toronto Notes, eyeweekly.com, Aug. 15. Too bad they had a few too many pints at the local hipster snore-fest before the gig, because Radiohead delivered a satisfactory but boring performance on Friday, Aug. 15 in Toronto. Their low-key stage manner was made up for by excellent lighting and innovative video work. The band sounded very similar to their albums and hurray for the technical crew — those lights were amazing!
It’s too bad the crew couldn’t find any animating force for the dummies that made up Radiohead. The lead singer didn’t say one word until almost 25 minutes in (a “thanks” muttered over the shoulder as they changed songs) and didn’t equal that feat for another 10. Even the two encores were anticlimactic walk-throughs of some of the band’s most mediocre fan favorites. It is clear Toronto, Ontario did something to displease this usually interesting bunch because, this time through, Radiohead were definitely not worth the price of admission.

FIX UP, LOOK SHARP
Re “Poorly dressed ‘fan’ thinks we’re cocks,” Letters, Aug. 7: Response to Name Withheld: rock music and all its derivatives are performance art, unless you are watching and listening to virtuosos like jazz or classical players, and even many of them are entertainers. Is it any wonder interest in live music has waned when so-called musicians look like bums and hobos onstage? What ever happened to cool? People do judge a performer, and if you look and behave like a basement amateur that will be the perception of you and your performance. Yes it’s about the music, but most successful musicians have an image and the stage presence they project is a via to the music — live performance is, after all, visual.
