Re “Strategic voting 2.0,” Toronto Notes, Oct. 3: If the splits fall right for him, Harper could form a “majority” government with less than 38 per cent of the votes. The Green Party may well get more votes than the Bloc Quebecois without even coming close to electing anyone, while the Bloc win 40 to 50 seats. We need a new voting system, and we need it now! How many wasted votes this time?  WAYNE SMITH

Our current voting system is barely democratic. When will the majority of Canadians get to make their votes count? Strategic voting isn’t enough. We need electoral reform.

Debate, debated
As the organizer of the UofT debate, I have to say that Olivia Chow’s claims in “Chester Brown, candidate” (Scrolling Eye, Oct. 7) are disingenuous. We approached all four campaigns three weeks before Rosh Hashana, and Chow’s campaign never mentioned the holiday (one campaign staffer said it was a waste of time speaking to students). Their “proposed new date” was a short lunchtime event on five days’ notice. Of course no one else could attend. RORY M via EYEWEEKLY.COM
