WHO For the past several years Cozmic Cat (a.k.a. Paula Burrows) has punched up the lounge sound to a whole new level of swank at Queen West’s Raq n Waq and funked up dancefloors at the Gladstone Hotel, Andy Poolhall (in her monthly girl-oriented party Cherry Bomb with Denise Benson), Concord Café, Straight and Slacks. Though she’s originally from London, Ontario, the five-time award-winning DJ started her spinning career in Philadelphia partnering with DJ Lucky 7 and spinning at Silk City Lounge in 1996. Promoting and playing hard paid off, landing her a top spot at Philly’s infamous 700 Club in 2000 where she garnered big time international recognition and a series of exclusive gigs such as spinning alongside De La Soul and ?uest love at parties with P. Diddy, Eminem and Justin Timberlake. By 2003, Cozmic Cat took a much-needed break from an intense DJ lifestyle in Philly and returned to Toronto to co-found a record label, From Philly With Love. She just finished a mix for local glam rockers Kids on TV (released as a 7” on Black Mountain Music) along with two remixes of Olympia, Washington-based electro rappers Scream Club (featuring Peaches) with Lorne a.k.a. Maggy Thump from Philly under the name Commonwealth. In the meantime, Cozmic Cat is currently pushing herself to create more original material.
WHAT “I love to see the dancefloor go off, so I like the up-tempo styles of house, electro, reggae, hip-hop, funk, disco, mash-ups, classics and, of course, some guilty pop pleasures!” says Burrows. “I love hearing a song that strikes me in a deep way, or that just makes my head start to nod to the beat. It really can be any style.”
WHERE Feb. 7 at Raq n Waq (739 Queen W) and Feb. 8 at Toronto Erotic Arts Festival with Nik Red. Gladstone Hotel Ballroom (1214 Queen W). $15 or PWYC.
FAVOURITE RECORD OF ALL TIME Mo’Wax Headz Vol.1 Box Set
FAVOURITE RECORD RIGHT NOW Bee Gees, “You Should Be Dancing” (Todd Terje reedit). “It’s jamtastic!”
FAVOURITE WEBSITE RIGHT NOW AND WHY “With music there are too many. So, I’ll say a non-music website I am addicted to: www.tokyoflash.com. I can’t seem to get enough of the futuristic funky watches they have, and I love to browse the ‘watch museum.’ Yeah, I have a watch fetish!”
WHAT IS YOUR WEIRDEST DJING EXPERIENCE? “I worked in a club in Philly that was so packed you couldn’t get near the bathrooms. I had to go so badly, with three minutes left to my song, I pushed my way behind the bar and into the stairwell of the building. Convinced I could pee in a plastic cup “like the guys did,” I missed my mark and hit some exposed cables on the ground that were attached to a fuse box. There was a spark and a loud “crack” and the fuse box blew which took out the power to the entire club! Uhh, oops.”
WHAT IS VITAL TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE? “Playing outside with my dog Kali.”
WHAT GLOBAL ISSUE CONCERNS YOU MOST RIGHT NOW? “Consumers buying cheap crap from overseas manufactured at the expense of the global environment, our health, and human rights. Buy local! The real cost of food and products is worth it in the long run.”
WHAT IS YOUR RING TONE RIGHT NOW? “It’s blissful silence because I don’t have a cellie.”
WHAT IS THE LAST GREAT FILM YOU SAW? The Orphanage.
WHAT ACTOR WOULD PLAY YOU IN A BIOPIC? “Halle Berry! Ha ha! Although Queen Latifah could fill in for the Cozmic-goes-crazy scenes.”
WHAT ARE YOU READING RIGHT NOW? “The travel section from The New York Times and the latest issue of Remix magazine.”
