DJ Spotlight

Junior Boys

BY Elizabeth Mitkos   March 12, 2008 21:03

WHO Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus of Canadian electronic pop group Junior Boys have kindly been DJing and mixing a CD to satiate the cravings for their follow-up to 2006’s highly-acclaimed album So This Is Goodbye (which was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize). Their just-released sixth instalment of Berlin imprint Get Physical’s mix CD series Body Language maps a personal journey through minimal-minded interests and various influences incorporated into Junior Boys’ albums, which are known for sparkling songwriting, arpeggiated synths, atmospherics and Greenspan’s honest, breathy vocals. Originally from Hamilton, Greenspan played piano and guitar as a kid, and after messing with early synths and an Atari computer, he learned to engineer music while in England for a year, pumping out band demos and “musak” at a recording studio. Listening to early R&B, UK garage and new wave at the time — in particular John Foxx’s 1980 album Metamatic — Greenspan was inspired to write song-structured music more than dance tracks and started Junior Boys with his friend Johnny Dark (who now makes synth-pop with San Serac as Stereo Image). They produced a handful of songs before Dark moved on and was replaced by Greenspan’s long-time friend and producer Didemus to complete the Junior Boys awe-inspiring debut Last Exit in 2004. While currently finishing their third album, Greenspan and Didemus don DJ hats this weekend.

WHAT “Funky hip-house and bangin’ micro progressive,” says Greenspan (with tongue firmly planted in cheek), who’s inspired by minimal trance breaks and says the best DJing experience “takes a guy with good records.”
