A big bump in the planned rail link from Union Station to Pearson Airport has emerged where the line crosses Strachan Avenue, south of King. Currently one of the few at-grade rail crossings in the central city, the provincial transportation authority, Metrolinx, has ignored city and citizen recommendations to lower the rails and instead proposes building an eight-metre high bridge by historic Fort York and through what has become a dense residential neighbourhood. Dubbed a “Mini-Gardiner” by opponents, this 1960s solution — think of the Adelaide and Richmond overpasses that cut through Corktown — is Metrolinx’s first big urban disappointment.
