Going mobile

Thirty-five films in less than an hour — sounds like film-festival programming designed for ADD cases. But what’s key about the fourth annual Mobifest Toronto is not just the brevity of its films, but their diminutive scale. Mobifest’s raison d’être is that the movies are ideal for the smallest of small screens: mobile phones. That also means that its selection of short-film finalists — screening tonight (Nov. 17) at 7pm at the Revue Cinema (400 Roncesvalles) — makes useful viewing material for enhancing all kinds of mobile occasions. Some suggestions:
Crazed violence: Between drunk texts to your frat mate, check out BJ Paradise by Spring House Entertainment.
Tripped-out and spooky: While contemplating the severity of an acid flashback, see Acute by Bárbara de Azevedo.
Animated absurdity: While on hold with your cellphone service provider: Talk to the Hand by Jeff Gill.
T minus 10 seconds: When you phone’s battery is about to die: the 10-second Transition by Bárbara de Azevedo.
Bass-heavy strobe action: When you want to instigate an elevator rave: The Chicken’s Fairies by João Rei Lima.
Micro-turntablism: While you’re waiting for a song to download from iTunes: Future of Music by Anderson Guerra.
Commuter infotainment: While debating whether to continue waiting for the College streetcar or find alternate means of transportation: Hitchhiker Public Service Announcement by MostlyCreativeWorkshop.
