The Planet in Focus International Environmental Film and Video Festival kicks off its ninth edition Wednesday (Oct. 22), delivering over 100 of the year’s best environmentally focused films. Tapping into the current green-minded zeitgeist (and recent docs such as The World According to Monsanto and Flow — see On Screen page 18 for a review of the latter), this year’s festival shines its program spotlight on the subject of food production. The opening gala goes down Wednesday night and features the Canadian premiere of Blue Gold: World Water Wars, which looks at the potential for a global conflict over dwindling water supplies. Also at the gala: the presentation of the Industry/Media Eco-Hero Award to Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky for his work examining how humans shape and alter the natural environment. Oh for the love of god, people… Beverly Hills Chihuahua topped the box office for the second weekend in a row, raking in another $17.5 million. The talking-dog movie beat out contenders Quarantine and Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies, which took in $14.2 and $13.1 million, respectively. The expensive-looking children’s fantasy City of Ember, which co-stars Tim Robbins and Bill Murray — eclipsed, perhaps, by Murray’s announcement that he’s on board for a forthcoming Ghostbusters sequel — finished brutally in 10th place, pulling in just $3.2
million.
