Though it falls outside the boundaries of our hunt (see above), those looking to make a pilgrimage to the high church of Toronto pizza can pop up to Vesuvio’s Pizzeria & Spaghetti House at Dundas W. and High Park, where pizza in Toronto began. In 1957, the Pugielese brothers (above) opened Toronto’s first pizzeria, and as they celebrate 50 years of pie, they’re still going strong. The Toronto Star rated it the best pizza in the city in 1981 and recently Mayor David Miller said it was his favourite restaurant. And for my pocket change, the square slices — thin, crunchy crust; small crisp pepperoni; perfectly greasy cheese — are among the finest meals you’ll find in this city for less than $4. If you stop by to pick up a slice or for dinner in the dining room, remember to say thanks to the men who brought the essential party and after-party food to our city. EDWARD KEENAN
