Mackenzie House as purgatory? It’s wholly plausible that the setting for this play within a play about the final days (and thereafter) of Toronto rebellion leader William Lyon Mackenzie is actually a setting within a setting. The meta-theatrical concept almost works as actors/co-directors Cam Cobb and Rupauk Sircar try to polarize their various roles within roles, ranging from an agonizing monotone of their respective John Rolfe and Mackenzie ghosts to the exuberant wannabe-radio-actor tour guides. But the excessive verbosity, which is only occasionally titillating, often feels like overcompensation for the clumsy execution — a purgatorial experience for audience and actors alike.
