The genial vignettes that comprise Bert and I are unworthy of their adapter. As far as I can tell, John E. Nelles does a fine job mimicking the dialects, mannerisms and onomatopoeia of rural Maine. But his material, recorded over a period beginning five decades ago, is all sub–Vinyl Café folksiness. (1958 may actually be the last time anyone laughed at a joke about the dishonesty of slick big-city lawyers.) The country mouse/city mouse joshing is bad enough; when Nelles segues into some directions-giving humour I seriously considered driving a pen through my eardrum. If New England folkways are inherently fascinating to you, however...
