EYE WEEKLY Review:
The turn-of-the-century "woman question" isn't asked much these days, but Burning Passions' production of Shaw's Candida brings it up with wit sharp enough to secure the play's relevance. Candida (Katie Lawson) is the object of a romantic tug-of-war between Rev. James Morell (Jeffrey Aarles), her "moralist and windbag" husband, and the fawning young poet Eugene Marchbanks (Christopher Ryan). Avoiding the Shavian pitfall of didacticism, the cast deftly interpret the playwright's sarcasm and irony, exposing hypocrisy without suppressing individual complexities. Whitney Barris' Prossy (Morell's smitten typist) deserves special praise, enhancing a show worthy of Shaw in the City's on-the-lake cousin.
