Nothing but the Truth
The Contender director Rod Lurie delivers another ripped-from-the-headlines drama full of well-meaning political points that all come printed in big bold type. The Valerie Plame affair serves as the basis for this tale of Rachel Armstrong (Beckinsale), an

Dean Spanley
Based on a book by Irish fantasy pioneer Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), this tale of a dog reincarnated as an Anglican clergyman is oddly winsome, despite a few moments that veer dangerously close to goofy. Toa Fraser keeps the silliness mostly at bay by making

Editorial Rating:

Potentially TIFF’s worst Gala selection since 2005’s unholy triumvirate of Elizabethtown, Revolver and Edison Force, this self-important but painfully lugubrious cop drama is the worst movie Sidney Lumet never made. The Noo Yawk accents are nevertheless out in full force as Norton, Farrell and Jon Voigt play members of a NYPD family forced to confront corruption within its own circle after four cops die in what appears to be a failed drug bust. The grim feel and grainy look is fashionably retro-’70s but director Gavin O’Connor fails to put a remotely fresh spin on material that’s already used for countless police stories, most of ’em — like Narc, by O’Connor’s co-writer Joe Carnahan — more compelling than this.
