Jan Troell makes good on his rep as an eminence grise of Swedish cinema with this stately, richly nuanced if somewhat ambling drama about a working-class family tossed around by the turbulence of the early years of the 20th century. The movie’s most lasting moments concern the volatile relationship of the married couple at its core, the fundamental incompatibility of the sensitive Maria (an excellent Maria Heiskanen) and the loutish Sigge (Mikael Persbrandt) being patently obvious to their ever-expanding brood of children. Yet perseverance and forbearance are the qualities that most interest Troell as he provides a remarkably clear-eyed view of the people of the period.
