CSS - DONKEY
Brazil’s colourful club-bangers CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) return to a
comfortable motif — the trials and tribulations of dancefloor divas —
with their sophomore Sub Pop effort Donkey. While fashionista
frontwoman Lovefoxxx and bassist/producer Adriano Cintra’s
drink-hoisting, ass-shaking lyrics offer insights no deeper than a
martini glass, the awkward sentences and lost-in-translation witticisms
are mercifully far more endearing than annoying. Prefaced by the
party-hard mission statement “Jager Yoga” (there’s no umlaut in the
title but I can only assume we’re talking about boozing in Lululemon)
and carried through with a consistently bumping pulse, Donkey serves
more as a CSS live primer than a solid studio album. Unless you’re
already drunk and in costume (preferably some type of elaborate rainbow
affair), in which case Donkey is the perfect soundtrack to your life. CHRIS BILTON
