Let's get the obvious comparisons out of the way. Much like The Weakerthans, The Details are from Winnipeg, have song lyrics that read like complete sentences, print their lyrics like prose and deceive you into thinking they're a punk band before gradually expanding their palette as the album progresses. They even have a secret weapon drummer (Shaun Gibson) who is not only a multi-instrumentalist, but elevates what might be rote rock-by-numbers with clever rhythmic shifts. Their mentor band even lends them guitarist Stephen Carroll for a guest spot on pedal steel. But The Details have charms of their own, too, starting with Jon Plett's considerably more confident vocals. And unlike their elders, The Details' history of punk starts in California in the ‘90s. That's probably what has earned them 10,000 MySpace friends, but it doesn't prevent them from absorbing outside influences ranging from country to chamber-pop. Next time out they're likely to be well beyond anyone else's shadow.
