In the tradition of seminal acts Zeke, D.R.I., Slayer et al., Toronto/Hamilton hardcore-thrash mainstays Cursed (un)happily deliver what you’d expect of the genre: bludgeoning guitars, breakneck drums and enraged, throat-rending vocals. But beyond the unfathomably fast “Night Terrors” and “Dead Air at the Pulpit,” this group sound doomiest on evil, downtempo instrumentals “III” and “Gutters.” The grinding “Friends in the Music Business” is also the best retort to slimy, Toronto self-importance yet. (“When you say ‘you’ll never work in this town again’ — is that a promise or a threat?”) A disc that’ll be a hit with family over the Easter holidays — especially the lamb-slaughtering part.
PONY DA LOOK
Pony Da Look once famously described themselves as “four gargoyles spewing juices from their throats,” which certainly does the job better than “lo-fi synth-pop.”
EL PERRO DEL MAR
Don’t let the innocence of Sarah Assbring’s childlike falsetto lull you into thinking her El Perro Del Mar alias is some kind of exercise in sonic preciousness.
YOUNG & SEXY
Ever since releasing their astonishingly good Stand Up for Your Mother debut back in ’02, Vancouver’s Young & Sexy have struggled to make music that’s airy and sweet without being precious, charming without being twee.
