Editorial Rating:

Only those familiar with The Strokes’ most obscure b-sides — i.e., obsessed fans — knew that drummer Fabrizio Moretti’s songwriting talents are a beast of soulful grooves waiting to be unleashed. The third Stroke to emerge with a side project, he recruited Rodrigo Amarante (of Brazilian indie rockers Los Hermanos) and Moretti’s new squeeze Binki Shapiro to craft this sunny collection of ditties, which you can imagine hearing from the band in a Rio de Janeiro watering hole on a warm night in 1961. The bouncy Motown shuffle of “Brand New Start” is the catchiest hook of the lot, but the real highlight is Shapiro’s centre-stage turn on “Don’t Watch Me Dancing,” a ballad that raises both spirits and goosebumps at once. Play it again, Fab.
