JENN GRANT PLAYS THE MOD CLUB (722 COLLEGE) FEB. 12

The PEI-born, Halifax-based singer follows up her widely-acclaimed 2007 LP Orchestra for the Moon with a debut for the Queen Street Easters at Six Shooter Records. The unspoken hope is that they’ve got the new Feist, in terms of commercial crossover potential, but she lacks Leslie’s pop sensibilities and risks coming off a touch too precious. Instead, Grant’s happier to explore her musical idiosyncrasies, taking a piano-driven groove on “Sailing By Silver Ships” and building it to a crescendo laden with vocal overdubs, or layering whimsical harmonies over the two-step of “(I’ve Got) The Two of You.” A cover of Neil Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” is unremarkable, but Grant’s own songs offer enough grist to render it an afterthought.
