Sports: The Band play the Horseshoe Tavern (370 Queen W) May 2.

Sports: The Band is the side project from Meligrove Band bassist Michael Small, former I’m Only Sleeping singer Nathan Rekker, keyboardist/Torontoist writer Robin Hatch and drummer Shayne Cox. On their debut five-song EP, a tinkling glockenspiel and a lazy, loopy riff open the disc’s guaranteed summer anthem, “Warn Me,” while spacey synths, handclaps and shout-along choruses propel “Cast Lots” along. The eight-bit orchestration of Rekker’s homemade effort, “Syntax Error,” seems out of place among sunshiny group-hug pop like  “Fleetwood,”  but “Sonnets” is a better mix of these opposing sensibilities, as Rekker’s understated vocal melody and nebbish humour (“Writing sonnets on the arm that I’ve been sleeping on”) perfectly complement the song’s dazed tempo and lush electronics.
