Cryptacize play The Boat (158 Augusta) July 8.

The second outing from San Francisco trio Cryptacize, Mythomania takes the brittle avant-jazz guitar lines you’d expect from a former member of Deerhoof and mixes them with elegant soprano vocals for a charming post-Morricone/sugar-pop aesthetic that’s perfectly realized on “I’ll Take the Long Way.” Guitarist Chris Cohen, who hung with the ’hoof through The Runners Four, reins in his chops to serve the sparse arrangements, which in turn serve the airy lullaby-style vocalizing of singer Nedelle Torrisi. There’s enough subtle weirdness here that even when tunes sound like leftovers from Cohen’s old outfit (“What You Can’t See Is”) or stray Broadway ballads (“Galvanize”), Mythomania sounds like the work of a fully realized band.
