Editorial Rating:
Sunset Rubdown play Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor W) with The Witchies July 10.

Dragonslayer, Spencer Krug’s third release in just over a year (after second discs from Wolf Parade and Swan Lake), finds the BC multi-instrumentalist picking up Sunset Rubdown right where they left off with 2007’s critically acclaimed Random Spirit Lover. Despite the fact that Dragonslayer is another sprawling epic, Krug has managed to embed some genuine pop hooks into his typically claustrophobic arrangements, and cut down on RSL’s mystical meandering. As well, Camilla Wynne Ingr’s vocal prominence helps to soften Krug’s idiosyncratic yelp, making even a track as obtuse as “Nightingale/December Song” totally palatable.
