By Divine Right play The Garrison (1197 Dundas W) Nov 20.

Local outfit By Divine Right is more of an idea than an actual group. Its alumni include Brendan Canning, two members of the Meligrove Band, Leslie Feist and Holy Fuck’s Brian Borcherdt, though since the band’s inception in 1989, songwriter/founder José Miguel Contreras has been the only constant. While their latest record recruits new members Michael Milosh, Dave Joseph and Stew Heyduk, Contreras’ lean songwriting aesthetic ultimately takes charge. Relying on loose percussion, warbling, psychedelic guitar and a generally mellow yellow vibe, dreamy songs like “Cupid In Oilskins” and “Figure Me Out” drift by like clouds on a summer’s day. Think Abbey Road crossed with the sentimentality of Dinosaur Jr.
