The Sea And Cake recipe — multi-band multi-instrumentalists with wide ranging musical and artistic interests — turned out to be a template for many an ensemble that sprung up in the late '90s and beyond. While the band itself has not been as active scince the release of 1997's post-rock tour de force The Fawn, Sam Prekop and Archer Prewitt have kept busy with solo releases, John McEntire continues to record and tour with Tortoise and produce bands at his Windy City SOMA studios and bassist Eric Claridge flourishes in art work and photography. After a break in the middle part of this decade, the band returned with 2007's Everybody and have followed it up with the just released Car Alarm (Thrill Jockey), an LP that soars with the scent of a warm sea breeze that flows and wisps through the air like a cloud of very good vibes. See for yourself when they play Lee's Palace Nov. 14.

LET'S GO TO THE HOP
Tickets are on sale now for the 30th Anniversarry of The Last Pogo. The 1978 film by Colin Brunton documents what was dubbed "the last punk rock concert in Toronto" and captures the sounds and spirit of the local scence in the genre's heyday of 1977-78. With the original work now out on DVD, Brunton is organizing an anniversary party/concert at the Horseshoe Tavern Nov. 29; the occassion will also serve as a chance to toast the late Frankie Venom. Teenage Head guitarist Gord Lewis will appear on a bill filled with longtime friends and collegues like The Ugly, The Mods, Cardboard Brains, Mickey DeSadist, Steve Leckie & The Solution and The Scenics.

FRANZ PLANS
We might not have to wait long for the first great record of 2009. Anticipation is high for the Jan. 27 release of the new Franz Ferdinand full lengther, Tonite: Franz Ferdinand (Domino/Outside). Lead singer and aspiring food critic Alex Kapranos has stated the disc's menu will feature a blend of the band's traditional sounds along with fresh organic ingredients from around the world. Starter course "Lucid Dreams" serves as a nice taster for the rest of the service.
