Cryptacize: Mythomania
The second outing from San Francisco trio Cryptacize, Mythomania takes the brittle avant-jazz guitar lines you’d expect from a former member of Deerhoof and mixes them with elegant soprano vocals for a charming post-Morricone/sugar-pop aesthetic that’s...

Editorial Rating:

Computers are a mixed bag: one second they’re making our lives easier, the next they’re gaining artificial intelligence and waging war against us. At times, Fasciinatiion, The Faint’s fun and funky fifth full-length, functions as technology’s victory soundtrack — propulsive dance-rock opener “Get Seduced” stalls due to unnecessary cartoonish sound effects, and on “Fulcrum and Lever,” Todd Fink raps like a computer set to Corny Motherfucker. But that’s not to suggest that The Faint should go back to riding donkeys and churning their own butter. More often than not, the band maintain control of their electronic experiments. The rigid robo-rock of “Machine in the Ghost” contrasts nicely with the track’s infectiously fluid melodies, and the slow, thoughtful “Fish in a Womb” introduces mood-enhancing sonic elements. Only occasionally does the medium overpower the message.
